At the moment if you’ve got a car it’ll pretty much be bleeding you dry. Petrol at an all time high with a large proportion of cars costing well over £60 to fill, car tax stings every year, parts and labour if anything goes wrong you need to sell a kidney for and now insurance is, to put it bluntly, whopping.

Book review- Slave Girls by Sarah Forsyth

Posted March 28th, 2011 by DIGS Admin. Filed in Digs Reviews, DIGS Student

Warning- this book is not for the faint hearted.

Slave Girl tells the true story of how at just 19 years old, Sarah Forsyth was lured to Amsterdam under false pretences and sold to the notorious Red Light District.

Despite this ordeal alone providing more terror and desperation than most people face in a lifetime, Sarah’s nightmare began at 3years old when she was abused by her Father.  Due to this abuse Sarah was put into care, whilst still having contact with her long suffering Mother and brother.  Shockingly, it was at one of these homes Sarah’s abuse continued with people, whose jobs it was to look after her, subjecting her to mental and physical torture.

WARNING ON FRAUDULENT CHEQUE SCHEMES

Posted May 21st, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in DIGS Student

Officers from Lothian and Borders Police Specialist Fraud Unit and the Serious and Organised Crime Unit have advised that they believe crime groups are targeting students in a fraudulent scheme involving students paying fake cheques into their bank accounts.

It appears that criminals offer students a share of the cash, a few hundred pounds at most, to carry out these fraudulent transactions.

Ds Aitken of the Specialist Fraud Unit, warns us that: “The students are told by the criminals that they will not get caught even although they know the activity is criminal. In fact they are involved with organised dangerous criminals who will pursue them and demand their ‘pound of flesh’ even if the transactions fail. Many of the students are foreign nationals, and if found guilty at court of fraud will have a criminal record, probably be expelled from the universities or colleges they are studying at and will in all likelihood be deported. It just not worth the chance.”

Police are now asking anyone who has been approached in relation to this scheme to contact police immediately and avoid becoming involved in this illegal activity.”

GINGER SNAPS (CERT 18, 2001)

Posted May 10th, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in Digs Reviews, DIGS Student

In all honesty, Ginger Snaps has to be one of the most underrated horror movies in existence. Ginger Snaps uses the transformation into a werewolf as a metaphor for puberty. When Brigitte’s sister Ginger gets attacked by a mysterious creature and starts to change into a werewolf, but all the adults around them think she is just experiencing puberty.

It has all the makings of an independent movie, the lack of CGI helps with that. But it’s the absence of the flashy computer trickery that makes it so different to other horror movies from the past 10 years. It has more charm than other recent offerings from the horror genre, even in spite of the hundreds of obscenities uttered throughout the course of the film.

The make-up and prosthetics are extremely well done when considering the budget. The werewolf at the beginning is very convincing and the small changes to Ginger’s face and body never look overly done or fake. In fact, Ginger looks a little scary and menacing in some later scenes.

Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle are both brilliant in their own ways as the sisters. Isabelle in particular shines as the titular character Ginger who’s personality changes incredibly rapidly and throughout. The two play sisters so convincingly that it’s a wonder why the two haven’t scored more starring roles since the movie’s release.

Although I’m yet to see the two sequels I’m pretty adamant that this would be hard to top. Congratulations to the makers on producing a decent, interesting horror movie.

Rating: ★★★★
