2Weeks 2Make It!

In The Pinnacles Digs The Magi article we told you about the 2Weeks 2Make It competition- and it has finally arrived!

The competition is South Yorkshire Filmmakers Network’s (SYFN) brainchild and is now in its 4th year.  It was set up with the hope to unite local musicians and filmmakers and gather support from people in South Yorkshire who love music and film.

Each band is randomly paired with a filmmaker and has two weeks to produce an exciting video for one of their songs.  Last year was the competition’s most successful year yet which saw band YO YO Static and the Shockettes take the winning crown as a result of collaboration with Richard Bolam and filmmaking team Electric Chaos.

Since winning the competition both have tasted success which is undoubtedly due to the attention 2Weeks 2Make It encouraged:

“It was an incredibly productive experience – what we learned in two weeks you would take two years to learn otherwise. We think the experience is the sort of thing that sorts out the men from the boys – the team we started with was not the team we finished with… it has certainly raised our profile, and it was interesting how, once we had entered, we very badly wanted to win. When our names were read out at the competition screening, it was completely exhilarating” Richard Bolam, Electric Chaos

This year’s competition is heating up with all the bands and filmmakers busy putting the finishing touches to their entries, ahead of the screening and awards ceremony at The Showroom on Wednesday 28th April at 18.00.  Tickets are £3 and can be bought at the showroom box office or by clicking here.  At the event, you will be able to meet the competitors and vote for your favourite video for the “Audience Award”.

The Pinnacles are backing band The Magi to scoop first prize this year but need your help.  To show your support, get yourselves down to the Showroom next week to meet the lads and to place your vote…

The Pinnacles Digs The Magi

Posted April 8th, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in Digs Reviews, DIGS Student, Pinnacles

Living in Sheffield means there is a wealth of local- musical talent right on your door step, waiting to be discovered.  And we think we have found something very special…

The Magi are a 6 piece Indie band whose influences range from Oasis, Morrissey, The Smiths and The Who.  The band is made up of:

John-Paul Jenkinson: Vocals
Andy Jenkinson: Rhythm Guitar
Bob Jenkinson: Lead Guitar
Ed Watson: Bass Guitar
Des Jenkinson: Drums
Mark Johnson: Lyrics

The story began over 3 years ago when brothers Des and Bob and housemate Jonno decided to use the songs they had written in their spare time to form a band.  With youngest brother Andy already taking guitar lessons and housemate Ed keen to start, the band took shape.  There was just one thing missing- someone to take lead vocals.  Luckily for the lads this came in the shape of cousin and friend John-Paul and the rest is history…

Since the band’s first practice together in 2007 they have been regulars on the live music scene in Sheffield, performing at The Plug, Leadmill, o2 Academy, Frog and Parrot and Green Room to name but a few.  They were also in the line up of acts at last years Tramlines music festival and are expected to perform again this summer.  The band has a strong and loyal following which is evident at any of their gigs.  This loyalty saw their fan base travel down to London last year to show their support when The Magi got a chance to perform to a southern crowd.  Every Magi gig is an intimate and personal affair with familiar faces in the crowd that can be found every time the band play.

Last year The Magi were runners up in the annual “2 Weeks To Make It” competition with a video for their popular song “Voodoo Taboo”.  They went on to win both the audience vote at the Showroom cinema and the reader’s choice in the Sheffield Star newspaper for best video.  This perhaps illustrates how much the cities music lovers really have caught on to the magic of The Magi.  The band has been entered into the competition again this year and is paired up with film making team Electric Chaos.
