Top 10 Freshers Tips

Posted August 2nd, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in DIGS Student

#1 Join Stuff. Thought clubs were for losers? Think again! Most universities and student unions have a club or society for everything, so find something you like and join up. It’s honestly not geeky!

#2 Decorate Your room. It’s so important to turn our place into your place. I usually find that clothes on the floor and pictures on the pinboards immediately make it more homely. Oh and make your bed for that all important afternoon nap.

#3 Don’t go home. Well at least not for a bit and definitely not every weekend. Your new friends will miss you and your parents will get scared that you might move back. Just kidding! They’ve not turned your old room in to a gym or anything…

#4 Don’t get too drunk. Yes its fresher’s week, and yes you want to have a good time. What you don’t want to do is have too good a time. You’ll scare your new mates! Or worse, vomit on their shoes.

#5 Smile. Total cliché, we know. But it’s a cliché because it’s true. So smile lots until your cheeks hurt. Just don’t show too much tooth. It looks weird. You have been warned.

#6 Talk to strangers. You’ll spend at least 80% of your first week at university in queues. Fact.  Make the most of it and talk to the person next to you. The only time when the stranger danger rule should be broken!

#7 Don’t forget the essentials! It’s easy to forget what you’ll actually need amid all the giddy excitement you’re going through. But ignore these at your peril! Going to the toilet and realising you didn’t pack any toilet roll is not cool.

#8 Chocolate and beer are your friends. And they will make you new friends! You’ll need an advantage over everyone else to get talking to that hotty, so tempt them over with your chocolate and beer (and your shining personality of course)!

#9 Make friends with everyone. Yep, even the strange guy/girl walking around clutching a pink teddy. You never know who your new mates will be, so don’t rule anyone out!

#10 Spend your money wisely. Yes, you may believe that it’s a wise and considered decision to spend your last tenner down the student union. Yes all your mates are going and it’s £1 a pint night. But wait! Think it through. You’re going to need that tenner for other such things such as food/stationary/toilet roll. All of which are terrible to be without.
