Are your words yours?

With a heavy heart, we find the answer is yes. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted June 18th, 2012 by Matt. Filed in DIGS Student

The academic year is all but over, your assignments are in and exams are behind you, so what do you do now? Many students find themselves on the first train back home to unwind and do very little all summer, which is great, but do you really want to get back into your old routine of lounging around the family home watching TV repeats all day? You’ve just spent the year mastering independence and now you have a decision to make. Should you go back home and get back into the bad routine of relying on poor old mum for your every need, or should this free time be used to bring some much needed money in and gain some work and life experiences? EURO 2012: RACISM

Posted June 15th, 2012 by Matt. Filed in DIGS Student

The UEFA Euro 2012 championships are being held in Poland and Ukraine where recent news and reports have suggested racism is very much still a common occurrence in the stands at matches. The BBC’s Panorama documentary ‘Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate’ showed footage of Polish fans shouting anti-Semitic slogans and the extensive use of Nazi salutes at games. The same programme broadcasted graphic footage of Asian fans being kicked and punched at a match in Ukraine by a large group of thugs. The programme has received a mixed response. In the UK the documentary sparked widespread disgust at the scenes aired and triggered a stream of news and media stories about whether it was safe for ethnic minorities to travel to the tournament. Former England star Sol Campbell went as far as to state “Stay at home, watch it on TV. Don’t even risk it because you could end up coming back in a coffin”, powerful words from such an influential figure in English football. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted June 12th, 2012 by Sam. Filed in DIGS Student

Father’s Day is a celebration honouring our Dads, father figures and fatherhood in general. It is usually celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June and this year that falls on the 17th. Although we here at DIGS believe that every day should be father’s (and mother’s!) day, it’s a good excuse to get your Dad a dodgy card, buy him a pint and generally make him feel special.
