Summertime and the living is easy…at The Pinnacles.

Posted July 22nd, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in Pinnacles

This summer the Pinnacles decided to open its doors to the public and have been offering summer accommodation for only £44.50 per week!

Bookings have rocketed with people coming as far a field as China to spend their summer with us.  The team are also happy to find that many current tenants have decided they just aren’t quite ready to leave us and have extended their contracts till the end of summer!

Summertime in Sheffield is great, with loads of outdoor activities and events to keep you occupied.  One experience not to be missed this year is Tramlines- Sheffield’s famous free festival.  The fun starts this Friday at Devonshire Green and lasts right through till the early hours of Monday morning.  For more ideas on how to spend your summer in the city, have a read of our red hot guide by clicking here

The Pinnacles is still taking bookings for summer.  So if you are looking for accommodation between now and 22nd August give the guys a call on 0114 275 4659.

Tramlines this weekend! Spot the Pinnacles van to win a ride on Sheffield’s Big Wheel.

Posted July 22nd, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in Pinnacles

As we are sure you are all aware, this weekend is Tramlines and we can’t wait!  The stage is being set up as we speak and the 50 venues involved are getting themselves ready for what’s set to be the biggest event of the year.

There are no tickets this year for the festival so queues are expected.  The main stage is on Devonshire Green and the area can hold 7000 people- once this limit has been reached it is one in, one out so be prepared to wait.

If you can’t face an early rise on Saturday morning, there are plenty of things going off across the city throughout the whole weekend.  For ideas on how to spend your time, visit the official Tramlines festival, where you can find the festival’s programme.

If you do go down to Tramlines this weekend, keep an eye out for the Pinnacles van!  If you spot us driving around the city, take a pic and email it to mail@digpinnacles.co.uk.  Everyone who emails in will be entered into a free prize draw where you could win two pairs of tickets for Sheffield’s big wheel.

Got time on your hands? Here’s how to fill it, productively.

Write a blog

Air your views, everyone’s doing it! There are millions of blogs out there and as well as being cathartic for you it could help new students to your city or your course. Why not write a diary of your experiences? Be mindful that it’s on the World Wide Web though and employers these days Google job seekers before recruiting!

Find the greatest free thing in your city.

In a world where Google exists, there is no excuse for not finding great things to do in your home town.

There’s free museums, art galleries, what about going on a voucher site and getting some discounts too? We recommend “VoucherCloud” (app also available on the iPhone) and HotUKDeals.

Get Arty

Got a camera? A sketch pad or a video camera? Why not go out on foot and find some interesting sights around your local area. Will make fantastic memories when you’re old and grey, also if they are any good send them over to us and we might put them online!

Oh and by the way, people will pay for good photos! Here’s just one agency; http://www.picturenation.co.uk/?ref=f8504ce86d2b96849889b0e50035dc74

Ok, so I admit it. I’m obsessed with Twilight. I know it’s geeky but you know what? You shouldn’t knock it until you try it.  Don’t get me wrong, the Twilight saga is no literary masterpiece and Stephanie Meyer is no Shakespeare.

However, I forgive the writing style because the story is so great. Pure fantasy, it transports me back to a time of teenage angst, loves lost and reminds me just how much high school sucked. It’s a love story so wonderful that it could only exist in fairytales (or nightmares).

The saga is spread over four books (they’ll make 5 films in total as the last book is a monster!) and tell Bella Swans story of her move to a small town called Forks. She’s miserable, shy and missing her mum. The story follows her through making new friends, starting school and of course meeting the Cullens, the family whom the books are wound so tightly around.

It just turns out the Cullens, a brooding, unsociable and beautiful family are actually vampires. Vampires that no one knows about. Vampires with special talents like reading minds and seeing the future (some people get all the luck eh?). Luckily for the town of Forks they are of an unusual persuasion; they don’t suck the blood of humans. So they pretend to be normal, going to school and working the old 9 to 5. This is where it all begins…

During one of her first classes, Bella gets to sit next to the gorgeous Edward, a member of the Cullen gang. All the girls want a slice and Miss Swan is no exception. However, this love story will not run smoothly. Even though Edward, like the rest of his family is ‘vegetarian’ there are some things you just can’t resist. And Bella’s blood smells good, real good, to Edward and Edward alone. Edward spends the next few weeks trying to avoid the girl and her sweet smelling blood to keep his morals and his family safe.

Problem is, it just aint that easy. Edward can hear minds. He has heard every mind ever; except one, Bella’s of course! This little change in the other wise monotony of the world he lives in has got him all excited. He wants to know more about this strange girl he can’t ‘hear’, regardless of what the consequences might be…

Of course, they fall in love. Terrific, all consuming, heartbreaking love. The rest is history so to speak. The next three books tell the tale of love lost and regained, heartbreak, danger, tantrums… you know, the usual teenage stuff. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll let you read the books and watch the films yourself.

As I write this, I am wanting/needing to see Eclipse, the third instalment of the saga in motion picture. The anticipation is killing me, however as my better half (and all my friends) refuse to come and see it at the cinema with me, I will just have to wait for the DVD. Meanies. The films aren’t as great as the books but I have to say they are getting better with every attempt. It also gives me chance to look into the dreamy Edwards eyes. He totally rocks the pale skinned brooding vampire look. Yum!

What are you listening to?

I was recently asked what my top five albums were of all time and I can safely say it induced a staring into space episode of approximately ten minutes. There is no way I could possibly narrow down my 50.8 days worth of music into such a small category so what I’ve decided to do is to give you my top five albums I’ve been listening to recently and a special “I can always listen to this and never get tired of it” album.

So, here goes!

1. Vicky Cristina Barcelona – The Sound Track.

I’m going to come in totally left field here, probably not an album many, if any, of you would have thought of buying and probably ten years ago I wouldn’t have either! Trust me though, it’s ace. It’s mostly Spanish guitar music, it’s beautiful, calming and inspirational.

If you haven’t seen the film you must, one of Woody Allen’s greatest.

2. Nightmares on Wax – Thought so….

This one came out in 2008 but for some insane reason I skipped it and bought their latest instead. After cursing myself profusely I downloaded it and lordy, it’s up to their usual sublime standards.

These Yorkshire artists are a cut above the rest when it comes to downtempo, electronic, almost acid house music. It’s perfect to study by, perfect to relax to, perfect to socialise to.
It’s a must have!

3. Kele – The Boxer.

I am a self confessed MASSIVE Bloc Party fan so when the rumour started to filter out that Kele Okereke was going to go solo I had mixed feelings. When “The Boxer” was released last month it didn’t disappoint but neither did it blow me away (probably had too high expectations though!)

It is a fantastic album nonetheless, well worth sticking this on your iPod.

4. Little Dragon – Little Dragon.

A little gem this one and stumbled upon by complete accident. This Swedish band have been described as R&B but I don’t think that covers it, it’s more bluesy, more soul filled, synth-heavy and would not go a miss in a nice underground minimal jazz club.

All that sounds a bit pompous doesn’t it? This album so far away from what that appears to make it. A clear winner in my playlist at the moment.

5. Fabric 13 – Michael Mayer

If you haven’t got any of the Fabric series in your music, shame on you. You either need to start with this album or add this aural delight to your (what should be) growing Fabric and Fabric Live collection.

Michael Mayer is a dance music genius. A minimal tech / acid / synthy producer and DJ that knows all too well how to mix an album that takes you on a journey from start to finish.

If you ever get the chance to see him live grab it. For now, get your mits on this, you will not be disappointed!

And finally my “I can always listen to this” album, of which I will say very little, mainly because if I start I won’t stop.

Bloc Party – Silent Alarm.

It’s awesome.

Now it’s your turn! What are you listening to at the moment? Give us a top five and we’ll stick it online!

Things to do in Lincoln this summer.

Posted July 12th, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in DIGS Student, Pavilions

There’s nothing better than basking in the summer sun, until you get bored of it and want to do something instead of course.

Here’s a little list of summery treats our fair Lincoln has in store for you this season.

On the 11th July South Common Fair comes to town and is totally FREE, whoop! There’s lots to see and do including archery (be careful hey?) mini-orienteering, crafts and skills along with displays like the heavy horses at work and plenty of other great things to see. A fab day out, here’s more info.

Fancy a giggle? The Big Comedy Mash opens its doors again at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre on the 16th July at 8pm. Tickets are £12, £10 concessions and they’ve lined up some cracking acts to split your sides! Check this out; www.lovelincoln.co.uk

The 17th July see the Farmers’ Market set up its stalls again and bringing with it all sorts of fresh produce that tastes so much better than any supermarket brands! Granted it’s a little more expensive but organise a special dinner with your friends and treat yourselves, it’s summer after all.

The weekend of the 23rd July sees the Italians hit our streets, with a market selling their wares as well as classical Italian music on the High Street on the 24th, “eccellente, ansiosi di esso!” we hear you cry! Here’s some more facts about that; www.lovelincoln.co.uk

On the 31st July it’s time for the Summer Gala! Centered around the city’s iconic waterfront you’ll find live music, the farmers’ market, fairground rides and all sorts of stalls to feast your eyes open. Admission is totally FREE, so no excuse! Here’s the lowdown; www.lovelincoln.co.uk

As always we’ll be keeping you up to date on all things DIGS and especially events we think you’d like to keep checking our site, Facebook and Twitter for more tips!
