Music // Daft Punk – Tron Legacy

Music // Daft Punk – Tron Legacy

The first original material in almost 6 years has appeared from Daft Punk, but those fans hoping for more club friendly bangers – you will just have to keep waiting.

It was announced way back in March 2009 that the acclaimed duo had been signed to score the the proposed big budget/high concept sequel to the cult 1982 film Tron; Tron Legacy. The material is almost undisinguishable to Daft Punks regular output, it has all been built to echo the tone of the movie, the snippets are appropriately dark and have a fairly standard intense action movie vibe, which means booming drones, coupled with heavy rumbles and tense strings. All in all the duo have produced 24 tracks for the film and are due to release them as the official soundtrack later this year. The band will also make a cameo appearance in the film as disc jockey programs at a nightclub within the film’s virtual world.

DIGS Top 5 Cheesy Films.

Posted July 26th, 2010 by DIGS Admin. Filed in DIGS Student.

We love cheesy films, after a hard day in the office there’s nothing better than kicking back with a film where you don’t have to concentrate when watching and can enjoy as a guilty pleasure for its one liners, happily ever afters and cringe worthy soundtracks. We HEART Cheese.

In compiling this list however it has dawned on us that there’s a good possibility that not only were some of you not born at the time these films were first released but more shockingly you might not have watched them once let alone the 100000000s of times we collectively have.  Time to put some things straight….

1. Rolling in at number one has got to be, hands down, purely for the ladies; Dirty Dancing. My absolute favourite when growing up, fell in love with Johnny, learnt every dance move and knew the words to every song! It became a Sunday ritual, we’d have dinner and then my sister and I would reenact the dances for our parents. Poor buggers. Woman, Jennifer something, that played Baby, was she ever seen again?

2. One for the boys (well, ladies will also love this) this time; Top Gun. Epic can be the only word to describe this 80’s masterpiece. 1986-88 were Tom Cruise’s years (Cocktail in 88, a little darker than Top Gun but ace), Tom plays Maverick and Anthony Edwards plays “Goose” who pair up to be adrenaline junkie fighter pilots in competition with others to become the best, defying orders, playing with fire and facing tragedy (and some really corny love scenes) Once again the 80’s soundtrack is pure ballad and synth heaven, if you were born in the 80s and haven’t seen this film then clearly you were “living in a box, living in a cardboard box” (1987, number 5 in the hit parade!)

3. Footloose, oh lordy, lordy. I do wonder if Kevin Bacon regrets this film now “You’re beautiful, I mean it, beautiful” we love cheese but crikey that makes my butt cheeks clench every time! I’ve heard they are meant to be remaking this at the moment, due for release next year, if it turns out anything like Fame or Dirty Dancing 2, we grieve for you Footloose. It’s about a big city boy that turns out in a small backward town and basically causes havoc by busting some crrrrrazy moves. Loose, Footloose, kick off your Sunday shoes!

4. Seeing as this so far has been an 80s cheddar gorge, let’s move on up a bit to the 90s; Four Weddings and a Funeral, the film that made Hugh Grant’s floppy hair, bad teeth and blithering ways globally famous. Although this is a cheesy fest it is also hilariously funny, a film filled with true british wit and dark humour. A perfect easy watch heart warmer.

5. Totally going to cheat here and use a film with a sequel as my last choice; Three men and a baby / Three men and a little lady. I have watched this over and over again, love, love, love them! Tom Selleck (fit) Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg are bloody brilliant. Funny, warm witty, well acted (not stiff as a board, smell the fart acting here, it’s old school good stuff) and basically puts a smile on my face every time I watch either of them! Soundtrack is pretty awesome too.

So there you go, that’s your next 5 Sunday afternoons sorted! Don’t blame me if you constantly find yourself singing Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding out for a hero” whilst waiting in queues from this point forward.

“He’s gotta be strong, he’s gotta be fast, he’s gotta be fresh from the fight… I need a hero!!!”

Money is running low, free time is on the up and your thumbs can only take so many hours on the Xbox and feet can only take so many steps around the shops! Time to get a job? Think so!

Bar / Restaurant Work

An obvious one and often the first to be snapped up. Getting a job in a bar or restaurant can do wonders for self confidence and gaining great people skills as well as being great fun! The hours are often long and the shifts can bite into a social life but when there’s money going into the bank, does it matter?

Volunteering

Wonderful for the soul and even better for the C.V, volunteering can be a great way to learn new skills and gain a huge chunk of life experience. Whether you do it for a charity or maybe an unpaid work placement it’s things like this that can give you the edge when it comes to getting full time employment. Check with your local council for opportunities as well as companies you admire for your chosen skills!

Here’s a good site to have a look at; http://www.volunteering.org.uk/

Overseas

You don’t have to take a gap year to take advantage of working abroad, your summer break is a great time to pack up and get stuck into an adventure! There are 100s of schemes out there, both paid and unpaid, where you can learn skills you wouldn’t get the chance to elsewhere and you can enjoy the culture of a new country at the same time!

Here’s some websites to help;

Office

When many students leave full time education and are thrown into the working environment having never worked in an office before it can become a daunting experience and feel like you’re on a massive learning curve. One way to ease this process is to take a short temporary job over summer maybe doing data entry or reception cover just to give you a general feel of what it’s like to work in a professional setup. Get to know what’s accepted and what’s not, this will also do wonders for you when it comes to going for interviews. Another plus point on your C.V.

Theme Parks / Holiday work.

Summer time means Alton Towers, Chessington, Marwell Zoo, the list goes on and on! They cry out for seasonal workers and pay pretty well too! Of course there are perks with some too, free days out, free rides? Yes, please!

Best thing to do is make your C.V look amazing, find out who’s employing and quickly fire your details over with a picture of yourself (makes it a little more personal, don’t include drunken night out ones!)

Good luck!

Student banking made easy

When you are at uni the last thing you want to be worrying about is your bank account.  Trailing round the banks is a painstaking task and most of them know that once you have chosen which one to bank with, it is unlikely you will change again.  This automatically makes you a great customer in their eyes and many are falling over each other to offer you loads of freebies and added extras to choose them.  Deciding on the right bank can mean hassle free student living so get it right!

We have done the hard work for you and shopped around to see what the major banks are offering this year to students.  If you haven’t already opened up a student account, have a read of our guide below before signing up…
