Most people know that smoking can cause lung cancer, but it can also cause many other cancers and illnesses too. Smoking directly causes over 100,000 deaths in the UK each year and contributes too many more. However, that did not stop me from having a few drags behind the school sheds with my class mates… obvs because we were cool!! Although I smoked for many years after, I am pleased to say I am now a non smoker! According to government figures, more than 300,000 children under the age of 16 in England try smoking each year. There would no doubt of been some bemused faces 21st March when the budget was announced.
A large sector of the student population will be too busy either studying and enjoying student life to have taken much notice of the 2012 budget. But spare a thought for the penny jar raiders of the country who were met with horror when their routine £6.55 for a bottle of cider and a small packet of tobacco appeared to rise beyond the restrictions of a piggybank that offers no overdrafts.
